Standing up for women’s health and reproductive freedom
As the only woman to represent the 30th District in the Senate’s history, Sarah takes seriously her role in standing up for women’s health and protecting reproductive freedom.
Sarah proudly voted for the 2022 Abortion Access Act that expanded access to care and ensures expanded training of medical professionals to perform safe abortions. Sarah is steadfast in her belief that we have an obligation to protect a woman’s choice to have an abortion or to have a child. That’s why she’s also led the fight to expand life-saving prenatal care to Maryland women, proudly voted for Paid Family and Medical Leave, and led the floor fight on expanded childcare.
Sarah’s statement on the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade:
“I’ve only ever lived in a nation where Roe was the law of the land - where I had autonomy over my body and the fundamental right of self-determination to build my family, my career, my economic independence, my participation in my community as I chose.
Tomorrow we will wake up in a nation that is less free than the one we woke up in this morning. Our daughters will have fewer rights than we had.
That’s why today I mourned - and I also rallied.
I’m thankful that, Maryland law, passed in 1992, protects a Marylander’s right to choose, and Maryland voters overwhelmingly ratified that law at the ballot.
I’m thankful that the General Assembly anticipated this SCOTUS decision and acted this year to expand access to abortion care in our State - funding critical training to medical professionals to provide safe, accessible abortion care.
I’m thankful the General Assembly passed critical legislation to also expand prenatal care, paid family leave, and record funding for childcare to support Maryland women and families.
So what’s next? Stay angry. Stay focused. Stay committed to our fundamental right of self-determination. Commit to not just voting for but helping to elect a solidly pro-choice Governor, Attorney General, and General Assembly.”
